Imagery of God in Marriage

Genesis 1:27
So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

As I read in my quiet time this afternoon God is revealing the beauty of this above idea from his word. We are created in the image of God, male and female.
As many of you may know I’m married for a little over five months. We just began a lot of new things in our lives including moving away from our families and friends. We have become utterly dependent on God alone for our joy and of course each other.
A couple of days ago I enrolled us in a devotional called 28 days to a thriving marriage. Both of us come from divorced parents and have only seen one or two fully functioning marriages as an example to us. The one thing that is most obvious in these two marriages that make them successful is that they are built on the solid foundation of Jesus Christ. God has revealed to us that He is the only way for a marriage to survive. John 14:6 says Jesus told him,” I am the WAY, the truth and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.
As we started the devotional it asked a question. What can I do to make you feel more loved? Colby’s response was that I needed to be assured that just because he is quiet does not mean that he is mad or upset, sometimes he just needs to have time to wind down. And mine of course was the opposite, and not on purpose but I feel the most loved when we are in deep conversation and fellowship with one another.
This morning as I was reading and praying and just spending time with God he revealed to me that “man and woman are made in HIS image. Sometimes God is quiet in our lives and we don’t hear much from him, and a lot of times in that quietness I wonder if he is pleased with the recent choices I’ve made and does he still love me the same. In this way God reminds me of man and Colby. Colby is clearly fine and just as deeply in love with me when he is and is not directly communicating with words to me. Man is made in the image of God in that way.
God also is a God that desires us to cry out to him, to pour out our complaints and tell him all our troubles. In Psalm 142 David is suffering a great depression and cries out all his overwhelming feelings to God. Much like I love to do with Colby and I desire him to do with me. It makes me feel loved! God much like a woman desires that we do that with him. He loves for us to turn to him in all our desperation and take refuge in him. Woman is made in the image of God in that way.
Man and woman are made in the image of God. I am rejoicing over that fact this morning. I am praising God that we are made in his image and that we have him to be the foundation of our marriage. God made man and woman in his image.What a perfect foundation of a marriage between a man and a woman to rest on.
