So I’ve always wondered if God is almighty and all powerful then why did he have to die to save us? The God who spoke the universe into existence and created a man from dust and His breath had to die for us….
It’s puzzling to me, but as I read a devotion a few minutes ago God revealed something to me. God had every intention for us to be with Him. We were created to live with God and to be in the garden and to enjoy life. God created Adam first. The first man…wow right? Then he looked at Adam and being the relational God that He is He decided that Adam needed a help mate. So He creates Eve. There we have it, the first couple, the first lovers. God is such a romantic! Then He looked at His creation and he said it’s VERY GOOD (Genesis 1:31).
This is where the story gets interesting. God also created the heaven and the angels before He created man (Genesis 1:1). One angel named Satan was the most beautiful one, but he was also prideful and wanted to be God. So he deceives the woman and the man and they break the one and only rule God gave them.
The Garden if Eden was full of every seed bearing plants and fruit bearing trees for us to eat (Genesis 1:29). God told Adam and Eve, “You may freely eat the fruit of any tree in the garden except the tree of the knowledge of good an evil. If you eat it’s fruits you are sure to die”(Genesis 2:16-17). That was exactly what they did though.
Then….just like God said they would they died. Not immediately but eventually. You see in the original creation, Plan A, there was no death. We of course screwed up Plan A, but not to worry our all encompassing God had a Plan B.
A plan to send his son. Jesus came to the earth. Jesus was fully man and fully God. Jesus proved some things to man about God. First He lived a sinless life, the one we were supposed to live. He showed us that it WAS possible with God. Next He proved that with God’s word alone we can overcome temptation from Satan. Jesus also loved the unlovable, dirty sinners. He proved that all these things were possible with God.
Lastly though and the most important thing is that Jesus came with an ultimate plan of suffering (John 18:11).Because God gave us free will and knew we would be deceived He would have to execute plan B. Jesus had to die.
So to return to my first question, why did Jesus have to die. Why did it have to be THAT way, why THAT plan? Well it’s because if Adam and Eve. God said in the beginning that if we eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil that we will surely die! And God, my friends, can not tell a lie. That’s not the end of the story though. As you may know Jesus got up from His death bed on the third day! You see our sins lead to death, but God holds even the keys to death. It’s not the end of our lives. 1 Corinthians 15:20-23 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead. He is the FIRST of a great harvest of all who have died. So you see, just as death came into the world through a man. Just as everyone dies because we belong to Adam, everyone who belongs to Christ will be given NEW LIFE. But there is an order to this resurrection: Christ was raised as the first of the harvest; then all who belong to Christ will be raised when He comes back.
So HE died so that we can see that God holds the power over everything, yes even death cannot stop His plan. Jesus is coming back for you and for me. Even if we are dead when He comes back He is still going to get us! So why not trust your life today to the one who cannot lie, the one who was capable of living a sinless life, the one who could love the unlovable people of this world, the one who could defeat Satan’s temptation, the one who made you. We really just giving back God what He already owns. Belong to Christ today. Be ready for the harvest because it has already begun. Jesus was the first to be resurrected, but He won’t be the last.
